Kitchen remodeling scope levels
- Refresh: paint, new hardware, refaced or painted cabinets, a new backsplash, lighting and possibly a counter swap. No layout or utility changes.
- Mid-range remodel: new cabinets and countertops in the same footprint, new appliances, flooring and lighting. Plumbing and gas stay where they are.
- Full renovation: new layout — moving the sink, range or walls, adding an island with plumbing, upgrading electrical service. This is where permits, design professionals and longer timelines come in.
Keeping appliances and the sink where they are is the single biggest way to control cost.
Where kitchen remodeling money goes
Cabinets and installation labor are typically the two largest shares of a kitchen budget, followed by countertops and appliances. Plumbing, electrical, flooring, backsplash, lighting, permits and design fill out the rest. Build your own budget, with a contingency, in our kitchen remodel cost calculator.
Layouts and measurements
Common layouts are the one-wall, galley, L-shape, U-shape and L or U with an island. Designers often check the "work triangle" between sink, range and refrigerator so no leg is too long or blocked, and leave enough clearance in walkways for doors and drawers to open while someone works.
Before you shop, measure every wall, window, door and utility location, and note ceiling height and any soffits. To price flooring and backsplash tile, use the flooring and tile calculators.
Kitchen remodeling timeline by scope
A refresh may take days to a couple of weeks. A full renovation commonly takes several weeks of construction — plus design, permitting and cabinet lead time beforehand, which can be the longest part. In NYC co-ops and condos, board review and building work-hour rules extend timelines further.
Small apartment kitchens
In compact urban kitchens every inch counts: full-height cabinets, 24-in appliances, pull-outs and under-cabinet lighting help. Ventilation can be constrained — many apartment buildings do not allow new exterior duct penetrations — so confirm options with your building before choosing a range hood.

New York rules and permits
NYC permits. The Department of Buildings lists installing new cabinets among work that does not need a DOB permit, but the contractor must hold a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license. Gas piping, plumbing changes and layout alterations require filings — ordinary plumbing work must be done by a Licensed Master Plumber, and permitted alterations to 1–2 family homes need a Registered Design Professional (architect or engineer) to file plans.
Co-ops and condos. Building approval is separate from DOB. Most buildings require an alteration agreement, insurance certificates, plans and fees, and restrict work hours. Review times vary by building. See our alteration agreement guide.
Older buildings. Demolition in pre-war buildings can trigger asbestos investigation requirements before DOB permits are issued, and lead-safe practices apply in pre-1978 homes.
