How to use the pea gravel calculator
- Enter the area dimensions.
- Use 2–3 in for walkways and patios; deeper for play areas per the surfacing guidance you follow.
- Adjust the density to your supplier's figure.
Formula
Cubic yards = area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 × (1 + waste). Tons = cubic yards × density. Bags = cubic feet ÷ 0.5 ft³.
Worked example
A 4 × 30 ft path at 3 in: 120 × 0.25 = 30 ft³; with 5% extra 31.5 ft³ = 1.17 yd³ (≈1.6 tons) or 63 half-cubic-foot bags.
Tips for using the pea gravel calculator
- Install edging first; pea gravel rolls and spreads without a firm border.
- Keep depth to 2–3 in on paths so it stays comfortable to walk on.
- Use a compacted crushed-stone base under pea gravel in high-traffic areas.
- Rake pea gravel level after delivery and top it up every year or two, because stones migrate into lawns and planting beds over time. A stabilizer grid under the stone keeps paths firm and stops ruts.

Pea Gravel Calculator FAQs
How deep should pea gravel be?
About 2–3 in for paths and patios. Thicker layers shift more underfoot.
Is pea gravel good for drainage?
Its rounded shape leaves voids, so it drains well, but it does not lock together — use angular crushed stone where you need a stable base.
How many bags of pea gravel are in a yard?
27 ft³ ÷ 0.5 ft³ = 54 bags per cubic yard.
